Algebra

Algebra is another branch of mathematics to know the value of the variable.

x + 4 = 10

In this equation, 4 and 10 are called constants. And x is called the variable.

x + 4 is called the Left Hand Side (LHS) of the equation.

10 is called the Right Hand Side (RHS) of the equation.

LHS should be equal to the RHS to make this an equation.

Few Examples of Equations :

(1) 2x + 6 = 26

The variable in this equation is x. In this equation, 2x + 6 is LHS and 26 is RHS.

(2) 8a + 11 = 19

The variable in this equation is a. In this equation, 8a + 11 is LHS and 19 is RHS.

(3) b + 2 = 45

The variable in this equation is b. In this equation, b + 2 is LHS and 45 is RHS.

(4) w - 33 = 52

The variable in this equation is w. In this equation, w - 33 is LHS and 52 is RHS.

Variable and Constants :

5x – 10 = 40

In this equation, x is a variable. 5, 10 and 40 are constants.

36 – 8y = 20

In this equation, y is a variable. 36, 8 and 20 are constants.

2m – n : In this expression, m and n are variables and 2 is a constant.

Any Alphabetical letter can be used as variable whereas the numbers are constants. (a, b, c, d, e, f, g, h, .......x, y, z)

The main purpose of an algebraic equation is to find out the value of the variable or the variables.

Algebraic Expressions :

Both variable(s) and the constant(s) make the algebraic expression.

3x – 8 is an algebraic expression.

6u + 21, 9c + 7x + 100 and 5d + 11 are few examples of an algebraic examples.

Even a single variable x or x2 or x3 can be called algebraic expression.

y3 = y x y x y

g2 = g x g

These are the algebraic expressions.

Terms of an Expression :

Let us consider the algebraic expression. 4x + 5 : In this expression, there are two terms 4x and 5. These two terms are added to give us an expression.

5x – 9y + 7 : In this expression, 5x, -9y and 7 are called terms. These three terms are added to give us algebraic expressions. In this, the minus sign (-) is attached with 9y to get the original term.

Terms are added to give algebraic expression.

11x + 11 >>> 11x and 11 are terms here.

q – 12 >>> q and -12 are terms here.

23r + 34 >>> 23r and 34 ate terms here.

w + 5q – 65 >>> w, 5q and -65 are terms.

78 – 21y >>> 78 and -21y are terms here.

These are typical expressions which are formed by adding their respective terms.

Factors of a Term :

5x2 – 8xy : In this algebraic expression, there are two terms. They are 5x2 and -8xy.

Each term has its own factors.

5x2 = (5) x (x) x (x)

5x2 is the product of 5, x and x.

5, x and x are the factors of 5x2.

-8xy = (-8) x (x) x (y)

-8xy is the product of -8, x and y.

-8, x and y are the factors of -8xy.

Coefficients :

A term is formed by its factors. Thus, 2xy is formed by the product of 2, x and y.

In this 2xy, 2 is the coefficient of the rest of the term xy.

And, x is the coefficient of 2y.

And, y is the coefficient of 2x.

a2b2 : In this, 1 is the coefficient of a2b2.

a2b2 : in this, a2 is the coefficient of b2.

a2b2 : in this, b2 is the coefficient of a2.

-a2b2 : In this, -1 is the coefficient of a2b2.

-a2b2 : In this, -a2 is the coefficient of b2.

-a2b2 : In this, -b2. is the coefficient of a2
