Word Problems

Word Problems have different natures. Each word problem should be solved in a different manner.


Example : 1


Ravi bought 2 kilograms of apple at the rate of $9 per kilogram, 6 kilograms of mangoes at the rate of $4 per kilogram and 11 kilograms of oranges at the rate of $5 per kilogram. He gave $100 to the shop-owner. How much balance did he get back from the shop-owner?


Ravi bought….


2 kilograms of apple at the rate of $9 per kilogram = 2 x 9 = 18


6 kilograms of mangoes at the rate of $4 per kilogram = 6 x 4 = 24


11 kilograms of oranges at the rate of $5 per kilogram = 11 x 5 = 55


The total amount for which he bought is = $18 + $24 + $55 = $97


The amount he gave to the shop-owner = $100


The balance he got = $100 - $97 = $3


Example : 2


Raja walked 12 kilometres in the first day of his journey, 23 kilometres in his second day of his journey and 19 kilometres in his third day of his journey. What is the total distance walked by him during his entire journey?


Raja walked 12 kilometres in the first day of his journey.


Raja walked 23 kilometres in his second day of his journey.


Raja walked 19 kilometres in his third day of his journey.


The total distance walked by him during his entire journey =


= 12 + 23 + 19


= 54


Answer : 54


Example : 3


Stella did 39 questions in a math contest correctly. Smith did 16 more questions correctly. How many questions did Smith did correctly?


The number of questions Stella did correctly = 39


The number of questions Smith did correctly =


= The number of questions Stella did correctly + 16


= 39 + 16


= 55


The number of questions Smith did correctly = 55


Answer : 55


Example : 4


Five ducks weigh 125 kilograms. All ducks weigh same weight. What is the weight of each duck?


The total weight of 5 ducks = 125 kilograms


All ducks weigh same weight.


The weight of each duck = 125 / 5 = 25 kilogram


The weight of each duck = 25 kilogram


Answer : 25 kilograms
